The Long Beach Playhouse, 5021 E. Anaheim St., is offering some holiday treats for the community with its production of Barbara Robinson’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, which opens Saturday, Dec. 3 and runs through Saturday, Dec. 24.
Friday, Dec. 2 will be a “two for one” preview night; tickets will be $12 each.
An opening-night champagne reception with the cast will take place Saturday, Dec. 3.
Also, kids’ admission will be $8 every Thursday of the show’s run, and those nights will include an appearance from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Families can visit with the famous couple and have cookies and punch before the show begins.
“We have some amazing talent in this show,” said Nicole Dominguez, who is directing the play. “Although there are a ton of kids in the production, there are jokes for adults and messages for everyone. It is a show that the whole family will really enjoy. It has sass and spunk. You might even have to sing along at the end.”
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is the story of the Herdman children: six juvenile delinquents who lie, cheat and smoke cigars– even the girls! They go to church for the first time after being told that the church offers cakes and cookies for snacks. The Herdmans are given roles in the Sunday school’s holiday play, in which they tell the Christmas story in a humorous, nonconventional fashion.
“The first time I read the play, I roared with laughter,” Dominguez said. “I have wanted to direct at Long Beach [Playhouse] for a long time, and I have never directed a holiday show. Doing a show during a time of year filled with music and laughter really appealed to me. I read the book when I was younger, and I really loved it. How great to be “all grown up” and get to actually direct the show.”
Tickets are available at lbplayhouse.org or by calling (562) 494-1014, option 1.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will continue on Thursdays at 8pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 2pm through Saturday, Dec. 24.
