Bixby Knolls car show to hit the street next month, seeking classic-car entries

The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association and the office of 8th District Councilmember Rae Gabelich will host the 7th Annual Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show next month and are now inviting owners of classic and show cars to register.
Car show entries must be postmarked by Friday, July 6 to receive the discounted pre-registration entry fee of $25. Entries postmarked after that date will be accepted at the “day of show” rate of $40 per vehicle.
The car show, which is a signature event in Bixby Knolls, will take place from 3pm to 9pm on Saturday, July 14 along Atlantic Avenue between Roosevelt Road and San Antonio Drive.
This year’s show, which is free to the public, will feature the “Legends of Lions” (of the famed Lions Drag Strip) with special appearances by racing rivals Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen, who will sign autographs and showcase their cars.
Located less than four miles from the site of the Lions Drag Strip, which operated on the outskirts of Long Beach from 1955 until 1972, the Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show combines a static car show featuring more than 200 classic and specialty cars in multiple award categories with a celebration of racing, paying special tribute to Long Beach’s place in racing history.
Seventeen vintage Top Fuel dragsters will be taking part in the Lions Drag Strip Cacklefest, the most dragsters to simultaneously fire up their 3000-horsepower engines at the Dragster Expo and Car Show. The final dragster fire-up is a highlight of the evening as the nitro flames leap out of the engines in the dusk of the summer evening.
Other highlights of this year’s show include a pinstriping exhibition in the Expo Arts Center on Atlantic, a professional BMX bike demonstration and Kenny Youngblood, drag racing’s most prolific artist, who will make a special appearance at the Expo.
In addition to the numerous eateries on Atlantic Avenue, the event will also feature a number of gourmet food trucks, as well as the event’s beer garden. Live music will feature throughout the venue.
