LB Chorale presents winter concerts featuring ‘masters of classical music’

January 31st, 2008 · No Comments · Community

The Long Beach Chorale’s winter concerts will bring masters of classical music to the stage this February. The performances, under the direction of artistic director Eliza Rubenstein, will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. at Los Altos United Methodist Church.
The program includes four lesser-known works by four very well known composers: Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Te Deum,” Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Cantata 118,” Johannes Brahms’s “Nänie,” and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasia.” The 50 singers of the LBC will also be joined by a full orchestra and vocal soloists.
LBC accompanist Bob Gunn will be the featured piano soloist in the Beethoven piece, which is described as an engaging “mishmash” of a piano concerto and choral work which Beethoven wrote for himself. The piece is also an audible foreshadowing of his famous “Ninth Symphony.”
Prices for the Long Beach Chorale’s winter concert performances are $20, $15 for students, and include a reception after each performance.
