lambda2006-karnette.jpgOn Sunday, Jan. 27, The Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club held its 26th Annual Human Rights Awards Banquet aboard the historic Queen Mary. They celebrated and honored outstanding members of the community who have demonstrated leadership, vision, and commitment to the mission of ensuring human rights.
This year, the President’s Special Recognition Award was given to Assembly member Betty Karnette for her years of dedicated service as a legislator, teacher and outstanding citizen of Long Beach.
Long Beach attorney Stephanie Loftin was honored as Lambda’s “Outstanding Woman” at the event. Loftin has contributed countless hours to the community: teaching battered women how to legally protect themselves and their children, mediating disputes between neighbors and working with the Long Beach Police Chief’s Advisory Group. She is the current chair of the Los Angeles County Alcohol Commission, Chair of the 54th Assembly District, Democratic Central Committee and a Judge pro tempore in Long Beach Court. In 2006, she ran for Long Beach City Council, competing in a field of several male candidates. She edged out all but one of her better-funded competitors. She resides in historic Bluff Park with her partner, Reba Birmingham. lambda-stephanie-loftin.jpg
The Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club started in late 1977 in response to the Briggs Initiative, an anti-gay initiative intended to bar gay and lesbian teachers from the classroom. Over the years, the club’s work in campaigns made its endorsement a sought-after asset as a proponent of human and civil rights for all minorities and an advocate for progressive issues.
Other award recipients included: Congresswoman Linda Sanchez; California State Controller John Chiang; Long Beach Councilmember Suja Lowenthal; Garry Bowie, Executive Director of the Long Beach AIDS Foundation; Lambda Treasurer Jim Hansberry; and Sean Zullo, director of Choices Recovery Services.
