Celebrating 35 years in business at 577 E. Wardlow Rd., Bixby Knolls Car Wash & Detail Center hosted an anniversary celebration on Sept. 14, with a deejay playing appropriately themed songs (such as Rose Royce’s “Car Wash” and Gary Numan’s “Cars”), free food from local vendors, a balloon artist who offered elaborate creations, prize giveaways, numerous games, massages and a free photo booth.
The occasion was also in honor of the wedding anniversary of the car wash’s owners, Sheldon and Shell Grossman. When they married in 1978, they made a pact that operating a business together would never get in the way of their marriage. For the past 34 years, the couple has kept that promise, while making their full-service car wash a staple in the local community.
The operation was first built by the Exxon Corporation as part of a string of car washes the oil company owned in the greater Los Angeles area during the 1970s. Sheldon, who owned several other car washes at that time, purchased the business after the oil company was running it at a loss, he said.
At their celebration on Sept. 14, the Grossmans sat on the patio of their business and spoke into a microphone to address the crowd and thank the many local businesses who participated. They then mingled with the attendees while posing in photos and playing games with them.
