Long Beach Arts Month to open up local creative communities

September 21st, 2012 · No Comments · Community

From local festivals like Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays and the Long Beach Zombie Walk to classical symphony performances and avant-garde theatre, Long Beach will once again celebrate its Arts Month this October.
The Arts Council for Long Beach sponsors the annual program that renews awareness and support for local arts and invites residents to explore hundreds of arts events happening in the city.
“Opportunities to enjoy the arts occur every day,” said John Glaza, interim executive director of the Arts Council for Long Beach. “Long Beach Arts Month makes it even easier to go see a play, or visit a gallery, or listen to live music, or take an art workshop, or attend a book club. You will enjoy it, and the arts community will deeply appreciate your support.”
Many of the events promoted are free, interactive events, including: performances and exhibitions at local coffee shops and local businesses; exhibitions at the Bungalow Building and Expo Art Center; music and dance lessons at the Homeland Cultural Center; community drum circle at the ART Center; the Long Beach Open Studio Tour; and the Belmont Shore Art Walk & Sidewalk Chalk Contest.
“An arts experience isn’t just great for your creative spirit. It’s also an investment in Long Beach,” Glaza said. “Dollars spent on local arts and culture are often reinvested into the local economy, where your dollars are needed most. Plus, you invest in a critical economic resource for the city. A vital local arts scene attracts tourism and outside dollars.”
Long Beach Arts Month is the new name for the program formerly called GLOBAL. While GLOBAL promoted “a world of art happening in Long Beach,” Long Beach Arts Month crystallizes the same mission through a Long Beach lens. To learn more about Long Beach Arts Month, visit ongbeachartsmonth.org .
