As part of Arts Month in Long Beach, Bixby Knolls is ready to celebrate “Art-ober” at the First Fridays Art Walk on Oct. 5. The Expo Arts Center will be loaded with two art galleries and live spray artists plus two large exhibits and staged readings from the Arts Council of Long Beach. Also planned are dance performances from Post Mortem Grotesque Burlesque.
Art-walk attendees will also witness the mash-up of graffiti artists, classic cars, funky haircuts, photography and baby clothes. Participants can trick-or-treat and also enjoy music such as jazz, swing, oldies, Klezmer, strolling polka and Seafunk Brass, along with improv comedy, birthday cake, face-painting, mask-making, and zombie shirts.
Seventh District Councilmember James Johnson’s “First Books at First Fridays” will reunite mascots Bixby Belle and the Knolls Ranger as special guest readers. Reading begins at 5:30pm at the Dana Branch Library.
After that event, Oh Very Young, 4378 Atlantic Ave., will host a birthday party for the Knolls Ranger at 7:30pm with birthday cake.
Attendees may dine out on “Art-Lantic” Avenue at one of the local restaurants and then hop onto the Big Red Bus to travel from venue to venue via designated stops at the participating businesses.
Bella Cosa, 3803 Atlantic Ave., will have all the information about First Fridays, maps, business info and restaurant recommendations from 6:30pm to 8pm.
When the businesses start to close, “First Fridays After Hours” begins with dining and entertainment at: Nino’s Italian Restaurant, 3853 Atlantic Ave.; The Factory, 4020 Atlantic Ave.; E.J. Malloy’s, 4306 Atlantic Ave.; and BIS Italian-American Sports Café, 3819 Atlantic Ave.
