Remembering Rosies

By Neena Strichart

Singing sensation the Swing Dolls kept audience members’ toes tapping at the Rosie the Riveter event last Saturday at the Long Beach park named after the iconic figure popularized by illustrator J. Howard Miller. Created in the early 1940s, Miller’s “We Can Do It” posters inspired women to enter traditionally male roles in defense plants such as Douglas Aircraft and the Long Beach-based shipyards while their men were at war. Rosie the Riveter Park, located at the corner of Conant Avenue and Clark Street, was formerly known as Douglas Park before the renaming last year.
