Signal Hill landlord honored for beautifying apartment complex

beautification-award.jpgHaig Mihranian was awarded the Signal Hill Planning Commission’s Beautification Award for his eight-unit apartment building at 2499 E.19th Street that he remodeled recently in a Tuscan style with new stucco, mouldings, doors, lights, wrought-iron railings, stonework, stairs, and landscaping.
Mihranian said he thinks he was ambitious with the renovations but was motivated by his desire to see more parts of Signal Hill improve. “I went a little overboard on fixing it up, but I wanted to see it improve on the lower side too. So that’s why I did what I did. I have faith in the area,” he said. “From the minute I saw it in its original condition, which was a bad condition, I had a vision for it to make it Tuscan style.”
James Kao, associate planner in the Community Development Department, said he sees real value in the award. “From my perspective, it would be nice to see the commission give out more of these awards as it would mean that more residents and business owners are taking pride of ownership and making noticeable improvements to better the community,” he said.
