Long Beach Shakespeare company to celebrate the Bard with activities that include Twain interpretation

The Long Beach Shakespeare Company (LBSC) will celebrate April as Shakespeare Month with a number of events, including its free Speaker Series.

On Saturday, April 4 at 8pm, Martine van Elk, professor of English Literature and co-director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Cal State Long Beach, will present a discussion entitled “Women on and off the Stage in Shakespeare’s England,” which will examine the prevailing medical, philosophical and political ideas about women, in order to examine a few of Shakespeare’s best known comic and tragic roles for females. Van Elk is the author of numerous articles on Shakespeare, early modern women and other subjects.

From Friday, April 10 through Saturday, April 18, LBSC will present Mark Twain versus William Shakespeare, a one-man show in which actor Carl Wawrina, as Twain, will discuss the author’s ideas about who wrote Shakespeare’s plays. The performance is adapted from Twain’s Is Shakespeare Dead?, in which Twain tells about learning how to pilot a steamboat up and down the Mississippi River while arguing with his captain, who was a devoted fan of the Bard. The presentation also includes a passage from Huckleberry Finn. The performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $10.

On Friday, April 24 at 8pm, Saturday, April 25 at 8pm and Sunday, April 26 at 2pm, LBSC will present (Shark)speare is Coming, an alternative take on the Bard in a wild and irreverent parody of Shakespeare’s bloodiest revenge story. Some material may be inappropriate for children. Tickets are $10.

On Thursday, April 23 at 8pm, LBSC will celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday with Songs and Sonnets by William Shakespeare, featuring an old-time radio presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Tickets are $10.

LBSC is located at 4250 Atlantic Ave, Ste. 2. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit LBShakespeare.org or call (562) 997-1494.
