Signal Hill Planning Commissioner Tom Benson has chosen the property at 2199 E. Temple Avenue, where Gath Insurance is located, for the October 2008 Planning Commission Award. The insurance company has been a community business partner for 20 years at that location, in the two-story commercial office building on the corner of Temple Avenue and Hill Street.
The recently completed improvements include significant landscape upgrades with drought-tolerant material and parking lot improvements including new slurry seal and striping.
Jason Klodt, president of Dalman & Klodt Builders, Inc. in Rancho Cucamonga, is the landscape contractor who conducted the work, along with the company’s vice president, Peter Dalman, and secretary, Miurel Duarte. Klodt said he was surprised by the recognition. “The award made me feel great. I never expected that,” he said.
The property includes a meditation garden which Klodt built about 10 years ago as one of his very first landscaping projects, so the Gath family returned to him when they decided to beautify the eastern side of the building as well. Klodt said his company utilized native-friendly plants for the project. “We live in a temperate climate, so we can introduce many types of plants from around the country and the world,” he said, explaining that some plants that were already there were left alone. “We kept the ice plant. When it blooms, it will be a really cool accent.”
