Long Beach neighbors donate thousands of items to Food Finders

On December 20, the Marina Pacifica condo units collected thousands of food and hygiene items for the November 11-December 31 Food Finders food drive. A small group of residents at the condo asked their neighbors to place at least one donated food item or small monetary donation outside of their door for pickup. The eight volunteers who picked up the items were overwhelmed by the amount of donations and quickly filled up the two bins that Food Finders provided.

“We were hoping for 570 items– one item per unit– but we collected far more than I imagined we would,” said Cheryl Berlow, a Marina Pacifica resident who helped organize the Dec. 20 food drive. “There are some residents here who are also struggling with bills, or living on a fixed income. Yet almost everyone participated. I am so glad we could help in our small way.”
Major Bob Foster hopes Marina Pacifica will inspire other neighborhoods to do the same. “The residents of Marina Pacifica are just fantastic,” said Mayor Bob Foster. “It shows that if everyone just donated one item, we can make a huge difference to help those Long Beach residents in need. Remember, Food Finders has a year-round need that doesn’t end with the holidays.”
Since the Food Finders food drive began on Nov. 19, more than 2,700 pounds of donated items have been collected from the 32 drop-off locations throughout the city. All of the donated items have been re-distributed to more than 100 Long Beach organizations. For a complete list of suggested items and drop-off locations, visit www.longbeach.gov/mayor.
