The Signal Hill Police Department (SHPD) issued a community alert Tuesday afternoon advising residents to avoid westbound Willow Street between Cherry Avenue and Junipero Avenue and eastbound Willow Street at Cherry Avenue for about an hour because of traffic congestion.
In an emailed response to the Signal Tribune Wednesday, SHPD Lt. Ron Sagmit said the congestion was caused by an accident.
“SHPD officers were on scene investigating a multiple-vehicle traffic collision,” Sagmit said. “A driver suffered a medical emergency, causing multiple collisions.”
On Wednesday afternoon, the SHPD issued a press release with more information, indicating that the collision started in the area of Willow Street and Signal Parkway and ended on Willow Street, just east of Cherry Avenue.
The collision involved 13 vehicles. Six people were transported to area hospitals.
At press time, none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, according to police.
The investigation is ongoing, and the cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
