LB Red Cross chapter announces layoffs, cutbacks, reduced hours

Citing current economic conditions, the Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross recently announced that effective February 1, the chapter will be closed to the public on Fridays at 4 pm and that they have laid off two staff members, reduced other full-time staff to part-time, and implemented an across-the-board salary reduction
“It is with extreme reluctance that we take these necessary but painful steps,” said Chapter CEO Nancy Kindelan. “In making them, we focused on our core mission and tried to preserve services provided to our disaster victims, military families, community members who need CPR or First Aid training, our high school youth and our own volunteers. The Red Cross is not a government agency; we rely on donations of time, money, and blood to do our work. We thank our generous donors who continue to support us at a level they can afford in these difficult times. It is our hope that, when the economy begins to improve, we can restore these positions.”
