The Arts Council for Long Beach will host its annual State of the Arts event in partnership with the Office of Mayor Robert Garcia on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 6pm to 9pm.
The event brings together residents, the creative community and city leaders to celebrate the arts in Long Beach. In addition to announcing new projects, every year the Arts Council recognizes local arts excellence by honoring residents who make an impact in the arts and culture of Long Beach. Arts awards, such as the James H. Ackerman Philanthropist Award, identify people whose work supports a city with a healthy arts fabric. The celebration recognizes artists, performers, educators and administrators who work every day to foster creativity, enliven communities and enable a thriving arts city. Online nominations are now open and are due Thursday, Aug. 31.
This year’s theme, “Arts Rising,” honors the work that Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College and Cal State Long Beach do for arts education.
“Arts education is the foundation for creating a dynamic arts audience in Long Beach,” said Tasha Hunter, executive director of Uptown Business Improvement District and board president for the Arts Council. “The more engaged our students are, the better our creative economy is in the future.”
The event will be free and open to the public. It will take place at the historic Packard by Millworks, 205 E. Anaheim St. New this year is a VIP reception beginning at 5pm that includes a musical performance, a preview of the Pump exhibition and an opportunity to meet the Arts Council’s 2016–2017 professional artist fellows. Performers will also be showcased during State of the Arts.
