The Rotary Club of Signal Hill on Sept. 8 delivered backpacks and school supplies to Jessie Elwin Nelson Academy, the first school to benefit from the Rotary Club’s backpack program. Other schools included Alvarado Elementary on Sept 13 and Signal Hill Elementary on Sept. 19. Each year, as its community project, the organization delivers over 2,200 backpacks full of school supplies to the students of Signal Hill, according to its members. Contributing to the efforts were: Boy Scout Troop 73, Rock the Vets, Salvation Army volunteers and the Signal Hill Police Department, which donated a room for packing the backpacks. Signal Hill Petroleum contributed the time of 14 volunteers, as well as providing lunch for all the volunteers.
