Last week, the Long Beach Planning Commission approved The Spark at Midtown (The Spark), a 95-unit mixed-use affordable development that will be located on the City’s major transit corridor. The Spark is one of a number of high-quality developments proposed for Midtown Long Beach along the Metro Blue Line light rail, according to City officials.
“Long Beach is committed to expanding quality, affordable housing for communities of all incomes who want to call this great city home,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “The Spark will provide greater housing access for families and promote the revitalization of the Long Beach Boulevard corridor.”
Located at 1900–1940 Long Beach Blvd., the project will feature a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units for individuals and families earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income, including 47 units reserved for households experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The development will also offer 12,388 square feet of ground-floor neighborhood-serving commercial retail, a new Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) office and support service offices.
“The Long Beach Community Investment Company is working to bring forward high-quality residential projects along transit corridors, offering greater mobility and access to job centers,” said John Thomas, The LBCIC chair. “It is essential to support every segment of our community by providing increased housing opportunities in thriving neighborhoods.”
On Oct. 18, The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC) approved an agreement to convey the properties at 1900–1940 Long Beach Blvd. to LINC Housing Corporation and approved a total loan of $3 million to provide gap financing for the development of The Spark at Midtown.
