Students invited to 4th annual free historically black college-university fair

Representatives from more than 50 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will be on hand to meet high-school students and their families from throughout Southern California during a free college fair on Saturday, Nov. 11.
The event, a partnership between 8th District Long Beach Councilmember Al Austin II and the Stepping In The Right Direction college-tour program, will take place from 2pm to 6pm in the Seaside Room at the Long Beach Convention Center, 300 E. Ocean Blvd.
“The HBCU college fair is a great place to learn about the college admission process and learn about some fantastic institutions of higher learning,” Austin said. “Each year we are able to successfully connect local students with college opportunities of which they may not have previously been aware.”
In addition to the opportunity to meet college representatives, there will be workshops offered on topics ranging from financial aid, scholarship and the application process, including personal-statement writing. Students are welcome to bring copies of their transcripts and résumés for discussions with admission counselors.
“HBCUs are my passion, and I am so happy that Long Beach Councilmember Austin is working with Stepping in the Right Direction to coordinate the fair again this year,” said Nicole Ford, executive director of Stepping in the Right Direction. “He cares about the youth and understands how important higher education is.”
The event is made possible with the support of the City of Long Beach, Pacific Gateway, the Port of Long Beach and the Long Beach Airport.
Parking is available on Seaside Way and is $7.50 for college-fair attendees. More information is available at (562) 570-6685 or district8@longbeach.gov.
