Misty May-Treanor, the three-time beach volleyball Olympic gold medalist who serves as the director of volleyball at Long Beach City College (LBCC), has been selected to co-chair the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.
On May 4, President Donald Trump announced his intention to appoint May-Treanor, along with Mariano Rivera of New York and Herschel Junior Walker of Georgia, as the co-chairs of the council, which “engages, educates and empowers all Americans to adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and good nutrition,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website. The council consists of athletes, chefs, physicians, fitness professionals and educators whom the President appoints. The members serve in an advisory capacity through the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

She earned three gold medals for beach volleyball at the Olympics Games (2004, 2008, 2012) as well as three gold (2003, 2005, 2007) and one silver (2011) medal at the Beach Volleyball World Championships.
As an indoor-volleyball champion, she won one bronze medal at the Pan American Games in 1999, one NCAA Division 1 Championship at Cal State Long Beach in 1998 and two California State Championships at Newport Harbor High School (1991-1995), the website states.
May-Treanor graduated from Cal State Long Beach, where she received a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology/fitness and earned the Honda-Broderick Award for the nation’s collegiate female athlete of the year. She was also inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
She also earned a master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine. Additionally, she served as a member of the women’s volleyball coaching staff at Irvine Valley College.
