John F. “Nick” Carter has been chosen as April’s Elk of the Month for the Long Beach/Bellflower Lodge No. 888.
He was born in 1929 in Lawrence, Mass., where he was raised. He later moved to California and attended San Jose State College, Los Angeles Community College and Long Beach Community College. He served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hector from 1948 to 1952.
After working in construction, he joined the Long Beach Police Department, serving in the patrol division, jail traffic division, motor patrol and planning and research. In 1970, Carter was promoted to sergeant, detective division in vice. He retired in 1979.
He was initiated into the Elks in 1980 and has served as a member of the breakfast crew and chairman of the investigation committee. He helps to fold The Chimes newsletter each month and was elected as trustee in 2004. He attends most lodge functions and events, assisting with trips to Las Vegas and Laughlin.
