I am disappointed that public officials such as Councilman Dee Andrews support a religion-sponsored project such as the Kroc Center.
Quite apart from Andrews’s violation of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, the Salvation Army discriminates against gay and lesbian people. Its website says, “same-sex relationships which are genitally expressed are unacceptable according to the teaching of Scripture. Attempts to establish or promote such relationships as viable alternatives to
heterosexually-based family life do not conform to God’s will for society.” Do a Google search on the Salvation Army and LGBT people and you will quickly discover examples of discrimination. AmericaBlog, for example, says, “The Salvation Army is anti-gay and actively lobbies against pro-gay legislation in the US and abroad,” and Yahoo! Answers writes, “The Salvation Army does not hire people who are known to be gay and fires those who are gay when legally allowed to do so.” I stopped giving money to the Army when I learned it does not hire gay men and women. No one who believes in full equality for everyone should contribute to the Salvation Army.
