Third annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival set for Labor Day weekend

The Third Annual Queen Mary Art Deco Festival aboard the historic ocean liner is scheduled for Labor Day weekend from Friday, August 31 to Monday, September 3. The festival, which successfully premiered in 2005, is again being presented by the RMS Queen Mary Foundation in association with the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the preservation efforts of RMS Queen Mary Foundation, the nonprofit corporation that operates the city-owned ship. This includes conservation of the Art Deco art and interiors of the 1936 vintage ocean liner. The festival will be part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Queen Mary’s 1967 final voyage and arrival in Long Beach.
Co-chairs of the event are Long Beach historical advocate John Thomas, vice president of the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles and chairman of the Queen Mary Leadership Coalition, and Bruce Vancil, executive director of the RMS Queen Mary Foundation.
Visitors that wish to become fully immersed in the weekend can purchase the Grand Art Deco Passport. It is $650 for two comprehensive packages or $464 for one.
The Grand Art Deco Passport includes a two-night stay in a Deluxe Stateroom (additional nights are $139), a Friday night welcoming reception in the Verandah Grill, a Friday night pajama party in the Queen’s Salon, seven fascinating lectures, the Queen Mary Art Deco Guided Walking Tour, the Art Deco Ball, and a Sunday afternoon tea dance. The package also includes two-day admission to the Art Deco Bazaar and Marketplace and a Vintage Car Display.
The package does not include the $20 Long Beach Art Deco Walking Tour, hotel room tax or parking fees.
Lecture topics will include an overview of the Art Deco period, fashion, cocktails of the era, the pin-up, popular entertainment, the Asaka Palace and transportation.
Art Deco attire is encouraged, but not required.
For those who only wish to spend the day aboard the ship or attend specific events, on Saturday and Sunday, Queen Mary general admission will include the Art Deco Bazaar and Marketplace, admission to the Saturday and Sunday Art Deco lectures and the Vintage Car Display.
