The Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation this week donated $650 to Jackie Robinson Academy to support the school’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, an in-school academic support program for grades four through 12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success.
Gavin McKiernan, the President of the Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation’s board of directors, presented the check to Jackie Robinson Academy PTSA President Joy Mendoza, Principal Stephanie Jones and several other teachers at a middle school staff meeting, where McKiernan said, “We are proud to support such a worthy program. This money comes from the great support we received for the 2nd Annual Wrigley River Run in 2009. More than 500 people participated including 25 students and teachers from Jackie Robinson Academy and we hope to have even more local students and their families participate as they commit to a healthier lifestyle through physical fitness.”
The Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to organizing and sponsoring athletic events and programs in Long Beach to promote community involvement, education, tolerance, and a healthy non-violent lifestyle. All funds generated will be used to benefit at-risk youth through grants to local programs and through economic development efforts in historically underserved parts of Long Beach.
