Scouting help

I would like to make your readers aware of an effort underway to send earthquake backpacks and children’s stuffed animals to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. An urgent race is underway to gather these supplies. Boy Scouts from all over Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, Cerritos, Bellflower and Avalon haven taken on the project and are asking their families, friends, churches and clubs for help.
In addition, several service clubs, including the Lakewood Rotary Club, have joined the Scouts in their efforts to recruit assistance with the project. The idea for this project came from two Boy Scout brothers who were thinking up ways that they might be able to help the situation. It wasn’t very long before one of the brothers spoke out loud the Boy Scout motto “Be prepared” and remembered that there were over 300 earthquake kits sitting in storage at Will J. Reid Scout camp with outdated supplies. The idea of resupplying them sounded good to them but they wanted to take it a step further and see if they could also supply small stuffed animals that might be used to comfort some of the children that they had seen on television right after the earthquake.
If any of your readers would like to help us with this project, we ask that they bring supplies or stuffed animals to the Long Beach Area Council Boy Scout office, located at 401 E. 37th St. The offices are located between Long Beach Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard on 37th Street and are open from 9am to 5pm each day. Monetary donations in check form will be accepted on behalf of the Salvation Army. Additional monetary funds collected will be used for transportation of the final goods.

In order to replenish the kits, we need the following items: AA batteries (for the portable radios in the packs) D batteries (for the flashlights in the packs) First-aid supplies, including bandages of all types Gauze– any size, but preferably 4×4 dressings– sterile and unsterile Non-perishable food such as energy bars. Meals ready to eat Toothbrushes, toothpaste Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment Ibuprofen, aspirin or Tylenol Beach flip-flops Water-purification tablets New five-gallon buckets with lids Unused tarps or plastic sheets Small stuffed animals We are asking that all items be new and unopened. We are also asking that any stuffed animals be small in size because of the limited space for transportation. The stuffed animals will be used to comfort the young children who may be suffering in hospitals or orphanages.
Any monetary donations collected will be used to purchase additional supplies and assist with transportation. No donation is too large or too small. Checks should be made out to the Salvation Army with a note in the reference line stating “BSA Haiti.” Please send these checks to the Long Beach Boy Scout Council. We will collect them and deliver them at one time. On behalf of all of the Scouts in the Council, We want to thank you for your assistance and look forward to making the shipment to Haiti as soon as possible. For more information call me at (562) 881-6412 or the Boy Scout Council Office at (562) 427-0911.
