In the Red

EXT CAP In the red EDLong Beach Memorial (LBM) employees have raised awareness of heart disease this month by wearing red and hosting the annual Women’s Heart & Stroke Seminar on Feb. 6, both events attracting hundreds of participants.
While most people know heart disease is the number-one killer of women, many aren’t aware that twice as many American women die from heart disease and stroke than from all types of cancer combined.
To help the women of Los Angeles and Orange counties better understand how they can avoid becoming another statistic, Long Beach Memorial hosted its Women’s Heart and Stroke Seminar, focusing on the prevention and detection of heart disease last weekend. Nearly 100 women filled the Houssels Forum to learn about topics including recognition and management of atrial fibrillation, as well as how to manage and monitor risk factors. Participants lined up for heart and stroke screenings consisting of blood pressure, cholesterol and non-fasting blood glucose tests.
The Women’s Heart and Stroke Seminar is one of the ways MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute (MHVI) at Long Beach Memorial is raising awareness of this “silent killer” of women. Other events in February included National Wear Red Day, a Heart Healthy Dinner and a community lecture.
