On Monday, February 22, Jasmin Garcia, Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, progressed to the semi-finals of the Youth of the Year Competition for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. At Monday’s event, held at the J Lounge Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, Garcia competed against 15 other youth from L.A. County in both a speech and interview process.
Jasmin was one of only two chosen to advance to the next level, earning herself a trip to Sacramento to compete against semi-finalists from all over the state. The winner of the semi-finals will go on to represent the entire state of California in the Pacific Regional competition in July.
Garcia is a standout senior at Lakewood High School with dreams of one day attending Yale Law School. She is enrolled in numerous advanced placement classes, and is a member of the student council, the Merit Scholar Academy (an honors program at Lakewood) and ELLAS (a program designed to empower young Latina women).
She is also actively involved in the Boys & Girls Club. She currently holds the title of Keystone President and has volunteered well over 400 hours at the Club and in the community. She spends every day mentoring the younger members whom she credits for being the reason she loves the Club so much.
“We are thrilled that Jasmin has made it to the semi-finals,” said executive director Don Rodriguez. “We couldn’t pick a better person to represent us. She is an outstanding Club member and a wonderful young woman. We are very proud of her.”
