Art Theatre to present opera-themed movie series

Long Beach Opera and The Art Theatre of Long Beach are teaming up to present a new series of opera movies on select Sundays. On Sunday morning, May 30, in anticipation of the June 11, 12 and 13 performances of Ricky Ian Gordon’s new version of Orpheus & Euridice, the 1991 film version of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s opera Orfeo ed Euridice will be featured.

Winner of the Olivier Award for “Most Outstanding Achievement in Opera,” stage director Harry Kupfer modernizes the setting and turns Orpheus into a guitar-toting, leather-clad rocker in this wild collaboration with the Royal Opera Covent Garden.
Orfeo (Orpheus) is sung by German countertenor Jochen Kowalski is considered to have just the right kind of voice for the role and powerfully conveys the varied emotions in this titanic struggle between love and death.
The admission cost of $10 buys coffee, mimosas, and a pre-film lecture with LBO’s artistic director, Andreas Mitisek.
