SEEKING SONGBIRDS
Women of Note, a nonprofit community arts organization seeking to enrich the cultural life of the greater Long Beach area, invites experienced choral singers to audition for its fall season by contacting director Carla Strandberg at (562) 598-5852 or at womenofnotelb@gmail.com. The group is in the process of expanding from 18 to 22 singers and has openings in each part.  More information about the ensemble and a list of its fall repertoire is available at womenofnotelb.blogspot.com.

GOT A BOOK?

SUMMER SOUNDS
Friends of Signal Hill Cultural Arts (FOSHCA), in partnership with the City of Signal Hill, will kick off its 2010 Summer Concerts in the Park series Wednesday, July 7 at 6:30pm with a performance by The Darryl Walker Project riffing out smooth jazz, R&B, blues and pop music under the sponsorship of Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. The free concerts will be performed each Wednesday night through Aug. 11 at 6:30pm in Signal Hill Park, 2175 Cherry Ave. Attendees are welcome to bring picnic baskets or purchase food at the event. MIND YOUR BUSINESS
Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal and Board of Equalization directors Jerome Horton and Michelle Steel are offering a seminar for businesses in the Long Beach and Signal Hill areas on Friday, July 9 from 8am to 11am at the Assistance League of Long Beach office, 6220 East Spring St. The free seminar will focus on strategies to help businesses survive in today’s challenging economy. FILM FEST FRIDAYS
As part of its adult summer reading program, the Los Altos Neighborhood Library, 5614 E. Britton Dr., will present a Friday Film Festival series on Fridays at 1pm from July 9 through Aug. 27, focusing on books made into films. Call (562) 570-1045.

CALLING ALL BOOKWORMS
The Dana Neighborhood Library Book Club meets the second Saturday of every month. Join neighbors to discuss this month’s book choice, On the Road by Jack Kerouac, on Saturday, July 10 from 10am to 11am. The Dana Library is located at 3680 Atlantic Ave. Call (562) 570-1042.

SHRED SHREWDLY
Shred-4-Good, a social enterprise of Goodwill Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (SOLAC), 800 W. Pacific Coast Hwy, hosts its monthly shredding events on the second Tuesday of each month. The next one will be Tuesday, July 13 from 8am to 10am. The first box is free, each additional box is $5. The event is open to residents and businesses in the South Bay and Long Beach area. Documents will be shredded on the spot and certificates of destruction will be issued.
