BMX, local businesses celebrating anniversaries during First Fridays

Bixby Knolls’ First Fridays on November 5 will be a celebration of anniversaries. The fourth anniversary of First Fridays will offer a wide assortment of sights, sounds, and “fabulous freaks” as part of the celebration. Bella Cosa gift shop is celebrating its first anniversary, and Pixie Toys/Vangie Ogg Photography celebrates its second anniversary in Bixby Knolls with special activities planned in their stores.
Also, turning 40 is BMX (bicycle motocross), which began in Long Beach at Bellflower Boulevard and 7th Street by a 15-year-old named Scot Breithaupt. He has compiled his 40 years of BMX history into an exhibit at The Expo Building, 4321 Atlantic Ave., which will feature classic collector bikes, old-school jerseys and uniforms, banners, photos, bike parts, early event flyers, artwork, magazines, awards and national champion trophies, and appearances from Hall of Fame riders. The films Joe Kid on a Stingray, Stompin’ Stu and the classic BMX movie Rad will be screened. Rad’s lead actor Bill Allen, who portrayed Cru Jones, will attend the event for autographs and photo ops.
Also included for First Fridays will be: book signings, sound art, vintage vinyl, belly dancing, ukuleles, Mike the Poet, ‘80s music, spoken word, Dixieland, live artists, music-student recitals, a photo booth, pirates, Timstrument, Bixby Rollerettes, spontaneous dancing, jazz, charcoal portraits, and the Knolls Ranger.
Seventh District Councilmember James Johnson’s “First Books at First Fridays” at the Dana Branch Library will feature Mayor Foster reading children’s books beginning at 5:30pm, and light refreshments and balloon animals for kids.
The First Fridays Information Table will be available from 6:30pm to 8pm on the northwest corner of Bixby Road and Atlantic Avenue, with info about First Fridays, maps, business information and restaurant recommendations.
The Big Red Bus will be available to transport attendees from venue to venue at designated stops.
