Friends of Signal Hill Cultural Arts (FOSHCA) has announced that Dyana Andersen and Michael Strauss have won the “People’s Choice Award” for Best Artist in its 4th Annual Show & Sell Art Affair. The artists were selected in a tied vote by those attending the art show, and the awards were presented by FOSHCA President Denise Damrow at the Signal Hill City Council meeting on Dec. 7. Both artists were born and raised in Southern California and are residents of Signal Hill.
Andersen is a second-time winner of the People’s Choice Award for her fused-glass works. She earned associate in arts degrees in fashion merchandising and interior design from Brooks College and Long Beach City College, respectively.
She formed her own company, DyNamic Glass by Dyana, after discovering a dichroic pendant while on vacation in Hawaii.
“At the time, I did not know that I was holding my future in my hand,” she said. “But after learning all I could about fused glass, taking classes and building a studio in my Signal Hill home, DyNamic Glass was born.” She creates two lines of fused glass treasures: “In the Home,” which includes flared bowls and platters, square plates, coasters, and more. Her jewelry line includes unique custom designs with specialty cut fused glass, sterling silver, silver plated, and 14kt gold-filled components. To see Andersen’s art, go to flickr.com/photos/dynamicglass or facebook.com/DynamicGlassByDyana.
Strauss has an avid passion for art and creating, which can be traced back to when he was a young boy attending elementary school, where he naturally excelled in art classes. While maturing as a young artist and craftsman, he attended several creative schools and workshops, including Pasadena Art Center College of Design, Ventura College, Los Angeles Mission College, and Los Angeles Pierce College. Strauss continues to study a wide range of artistic disciplines such as oil and acrylic painting, pen and ink, charcoal and pastel drawing, sculpture and photography. He loves to craft just about anything he can get his creative hands on and is eager to share his talent with others.
For the last 25 years, he has worked in the toy industry as a master model maker, building sculpted mechanical working prototypes created from various raw materials.  His creative works have been featured in several shows and exhibits in the Ventura and Los Angeles areas, and his paintings, sculptures and photography have won numerous awards. Visit mstraussstudios.com.
FOSHCA’s Show & Sell Art Affair is an annual event which takes place on the second Saturday in October, designed to highlight the works of talented artists and crafters “on the Hill” and from surrounding communities who compete for the opportunity to show and sell a mix of artistic works. For more information and an application to participate in the show, contact FOSHCA at FOSHCA@verizon.net or (562) 989-7370.
