St. Mary Foundation exceeds $1.25 million 40th anniversary campaign goal

The St. Mary Medical Center Foundation (SMMCF), which is celebrating 40 years of supporting the work of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and other hospital programs, successfully completed its 40th Anniversary Campaign by raising $1.4 million against a goal of $1.25 million.
Campaign Chair Lou Cassani announced the achievement at a recent meeting, and he noted that it was accomplished in record time– nine months. “Approximately 80 campaign-specific gifts were received from St. Mary Board Members, friends, grateful patients, area corporations and foundations to support the mission-focused programs of the Sisters and St. Mary, as well as the hospital’s Centers of Excellence in Cardiology, Bariatrics, Orthopedic Surgery and Obstetrics,” said Cassani. The Evalyn M. Bauer Foundation, which matched all $5,000 gifts to the Campaign and to the Foundation’s annual auction, was also acknowledged.
Leo Vander Lans, the SMMCF chair, stated, “2010 has been a very good year. In addition to successfully concluding the campaign, the Foundation has experienced record net receipts for our 30th Annual Gala Dinner and Auction; several significant six and seven-figure planned gifts from long-time friends of St. Mary; a grant award of $1.9 million to expand the hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program; and a $1.1 million grant to support patients being assisted by the hospital’s Comprehensive Aids Resource Education Program.”
Chris DiCicco, SMMC’s president and CEO, added, “The Foundation’s success enables St. Mary to be not just a good hospital and community resource, but a great one. With the continued help of the Foundation, we plan to expand our historic commitment to greater Long Beach. The legacy of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word demands no less.”
