LBPD to conduct DUI checkpoint this weekend

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will be conducting a DUI/driver license checkpoint on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 6pm until 2am in the East Division. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol-involved collisions, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as to educate the public on the dangers of driving while impaired
All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. The checkpoint is an attempt to reduce those tragedies, as well as to ensure drivers have valid driver’s licenses. By publicizing these enforcement and educational efforts, the LBPD believes motorists may be deterred from drinking and driving.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked, and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 9-1-1 if they see a suspected drunk driver.
Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
