Stephen Strichart, associate publisher of the Signal Tribune, has been selected Elk of the Month at the Bellflower/Long Beach Lodge No. 888 for January 2011.
Strichart was born March 12, 1948 in Jackson Heights, New York and came to Long Beach when he was 5 years old. His education, all based in the Long Beach area, included his graduating from Wilson High School and earning an associate’s degree from Long Beach City College. In 1969, he became a police officer with the Long Beach Police Department, where he remained for 31 years. He now serves as a civil service commissioner for the City of Signal Hill.
He joined the Elks on June 21, 1993, and now serves as chairman of the Americanism Committee, as well as overseeing boys’ and girls’ scouting activities and Eagle Scout awards. He has also served as a member of the Breakfast Committee.
He and his wife Neena also spent several hours reading the dozens of essay entries for the Elks Lodge’s Americanism Contest.
