Taxpayers should select carefully when choosing tax preparers, says FTB

The Franchise Tax Board today reminded the more than 9.7 million taxpayers who use tax preparers for the income tax filing season to make sure their preparer is a qualified tax professional.
“Taxpayers are responsible for errors made on their tax returns even if they are made by a tax preparer,” said controller John Chiang.

Social Security warns seniors to beware of scam phone calls, e-mails

Differing tax laws could cause headaches for domestic partners

Earlier this month, California enacted SB1827, which requires registered domestic partners (RDPs) to file as married for the 2007 tax year.
Though the Federal law does not recognize domestic partnerships, this new tax law will dramatically change how RDPs file 2007’s and future tax returns.

Franchise Tax Board wants to return nearly $10M in unclaimed tax refunds

The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is trying to find more than 37,000 California taxpayers who are owed $9.8 million in state tax refunds that remain unclaimed.
“California taxpayers that have not received their 2006 refund can call the Franchise Tax Board and have a quick replacement check sent,” said State Controller and FTB Chair John Chiang.
