TAKE IT TO HEART
Memorial Medical Center Foundation and Long Beach Memorial’s Center for Women’s Cardiac Health & Research is hosting a Women’s Heart Lecture and Screening today from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Petroleum Club, 3636 Linden Avenue. The program is tailored exclusively to women. Screenings and expert advice on heart disease and risks will be provided. Call the Memorial Medical Center Foundation at (562) 933-1670 to register.

HILL HISTORY
The Signal Hill Historical Society will have a general meeting open to the public tonight at 6:30 pm, in the Signal Hill Library, 1770 East Hill Street. For more info, call Frank Virga at (562) 961-8735.

LIP SERVICE
Hearing Loss Association, Long Beach/Lakewood Chapter is a support group offering education on coping skills and resources to help the hearing-impaired survive in a hearing world. HLA meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Weingart Senior Center, 5220 Oliva Avenue, in Lakewood. Admission is free. After tonight’s meeting, Gloria Williams, interpreter coordinator of Disabled Student Services of Long Beach City College, will be speaking at 7:15 p.m. on the different programs, such as lip reading, offered by the college. HELPING THE HOUNDS
Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California is having its 8th Annual Basset Hound Garage Sale on Saturday, July 12 from 8 a.m. to noon at 3870 Rose Avenue. Donations (except adult clothing) are being accepted and items can be left between the houses. Donation forms and tax forms are available at the front door. Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California is dedicated to rescuing Bassets, getting them medical care, finding good homes and generally promoting the breed.

MEET A COMIC-BOOK PIONEER
Phil Yeh, known as the godfather of the graphic novel, will be having a closing reception for his art show at the Artistic Edge gallery, 2105 E. Fourth Street, Saturday, July 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The show runs through July 19. For more info, call (562) 433-5169.

MASONRY OF MEMORIES
July is the last month to reserve a Hilltop Park brick inscription. The Friends of the Signal Hill Library is encouraging the public to participate by engraving a name, special date, memory of a loved one, or other tribute at the park’s name plaza. This will be the final phase of the brick inscriptions. Tax-deductible contributions help support the library and its programs. Brick inscriptions are $50 for one line of engraving, $75 for two lines and $100 for three. For more info or order forms, call (562) 989-7330.

ABRACADABRA!
Signal Hill Park Community Center is hosting a puppet show and magic show as part of its youth library program on Wednesday, July 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the community center, 1780 E Hill Street. FOR THE FAMILY TREE
The Questing Heirs Genealogical Society of Long Beach will have its July meeting on Sunday, July 20 at 1:15 pm in the Parish Hall of the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1900 East Carson Street. The topic for July’s meeting will be “American Indian Research and the Internet” presented by Daniel Bartosz.
