THURSDAY THRIFT
Assistance League of Long Beach’s Thrift and Vintage Shop will have its once-a-year “Asian collectibles” sale beginning today at 10 a.m. It includes clothing, art work, ceramics, furniture and home decor. All proceeds benefit Assistance League of Long Beach philanthropic programs including Operation School Bell and their Orthodontic Center. The thrift shop is located at 2100 E. 4th Street. CANCER SURVIVORS LECTURE
Long Beach Memorial will host a lecture entitled “Cancer Patients, Survivors and Loved Ones” today at 6 p.m. at Cal State Long Beach’s Soroptimist House, 5900 Beach Drive. HISTORY ON THE HILL

FEELING LUCKY?
The Long Beach Police Historical Society is presenting “Casino Night 2008″ on Friday, August 15 from 7 p.m. to midnight at Skylinks at Long Beach, 4800 E. Wardlow Road. Cost is $50 per person, which includes “$1000 casino play chips,” full buffet dinner provided by Skylinks, an opportunity drawing, silent auction and free parking. Tickets are available at the Long Beach Police Officers Association office at 2865 Temple Avenue in Signal Hill, or by calling the LBPOA at (562) 426-1201. Tickets may also be purchased at the door that night. Drawing and auction items include vacations, 42-inch plasma TV, sports memorabilia autographed by Brett Favre, and more.

Join Ninth District Councilman Val Lerch for a neighborhood clean-up of the Long Beach Boulevard corridor from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 16. Meet in front of the church at 132 E. Artesia Blvd.
TWO-WHEELED FUN
Moms, dads and kids are invited to a Family Bike Safety Rodeo from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 16 at Birney Elementary School, 710 W. Spring Street. Registration from 10 a.m. to noon. Free helmets to the first 100 registered kids, who should bring bikes to participate in the event, which will also include bike snail races, bike licensing by Long Beach Fire Department, bike safety inspection, games, opportunity drawings, lunch and a special appearance by professional cyclist Tony Cruz.
