“A revival of culture” is how M.I.T. student Daniel Sngiem described Guillermo Avalos’ mural at the corner of Anaheim and Mahanna in Long Beach. Sngiem visited his family that weekend from his Massachusetts school to witness the dedication of the “Welcome to Cambodia Town” mural. Standing tall on the side of a building at 53′ x 17′, Wilson graduate and artist Avalos led community volunteers of all ages to create this painted masterpiece for the Cambodia Town community.
This marks the fifth mural Avalos has made for Parks, Recreation, and Marine Community Recreation Services and Community Development Neighborhood Services Bureau. “Paseo de las Mariposas” on Fashion Avenue and “Bixby Park History Mural” on Cherry Avenue are just a few of Avalos’ contributions to the Long Beach community. Family, friends, and community all joined Avalos in the mural’s dedication last Saturday at the site of the mural.
“Cambodia Town is one of the many things that makes Long Beach one of the most cultural and diverse cities of the world, and this mural is an excellent depiction of that,” says Sngiem.
