The Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and the Dan Hernandez Youth Foundation are sponsoring the Annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, Nov. 22 for kids up to 15 years of age, who will be able to fish with their own poles at El Dorado East Regional Park lake in Long Beach. (Anyone over 16 years of age is required to have a California State Fishing License.) Volunteers and staff of the Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation will be on hand to lend rods and reels, and to educate kids on proper fishing techniques and etiquette. Bait will be provided free of charge while supplies last.
The Fishing Derby will take place at El Dorado East Regional Park, 7550 East Spring Street (and the 605 Freeway) at the lake in Area II, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and the Fishing Derby from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. There will be raffle prizes drawn at 1 p.m. The lake will be open to registered Fishing Derby participants only. Persons 16 years or older will not have access to the lake until the Derby ends at 1 p.m. The event is free except for a $7 vehicle entry fee into the park.
Daniel Hernandez is the host and producer of Sports Fishing with Dan Hernandez, a weekly television fishing series. The Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation holds free fishing events throughout California and uses fishing to build youths self-esteem and self-confidence, working to ensure that every child gets an opportunity to experience the thrill of sport fishing and a basic introduction in the marine sciences.
The lakes at El Dorado Regional Park are stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game. The fish (catfish and trout) are bred and raised at hatcheries and planted in rural and urban lakes in support of, and to promote, freshwater fishing.
