READY TO VOLUNTEER?
Rancho Los Cerritos, 4600 Virginia Road, Long Beach’s only national and state historic landmark and a public museum, is seeking new volunteers for a variety of program opportunities. The Rancho is hosting a “Volunteer Opportunities Coffee” on Saturday, September 5 from 10am to noon. A complimentary continental breakfast will be provided. Find out how to: become a tour docent, help with the historic gardens, work on the historical collections, conduct research, or assist with the museum gift shop, as well as learn about educational programs and events, including the award-winning fourth-grade school program “Adobe Days Revisited,” and seasonal events: Christmas Candlelight Tours, Summer Concert Series and Mud Mania. DIABETES 101
Community Hospital of Long Beach (CHLB) hosts Diabetes 101 classes for individuals who have recently been diagnosed, as well as those who are interested in up-to-date information. This four-week intensive program teaches participants the ABCs of living with diabetes. The Fall Diabetes 101 sessions are: Wednesdays, September 9, 16, 23 and 30. The following four weeks are: Wednesdays, October 21, 28 and November 4 and 11. Sessions are scheduled from 2pm to 3:30pm and from 5:30pm to 7pm. All of the classes will be in Conference Room 3 on the “B” level of the hospital and are free to participants. Reservations required. Call (562) 494-0532.
WOMAN OF POWER
The Long Beach chapter of the American Association of University Women will feature guest speaker Captain Catherine Zurn of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at a luncheon meeting Saturday, Sept. 12 at Acapulco restaurant, 6270 E. PCH. Zurn will speak at 11am, and the luncheon will follow at noon. Zurn, who was selected as one of the “Ten Women of Power in O.C.” by OC Metro magazine in 2006, will speak about breaking barriers for women in employment and management. Reservations required. GET A GREEN THUMB
Long Beach Heritage will offer a Garden Seminar at the Bembridge House, 953 Park Circle, on Saturday, September 12 at 1pm. The event will feature master gardener Jan Brider, who will present “Ten Tips for a Beautiful Garden” and “Fall Care of Roses.” Refreshments served and questions answered during intermission. VROOOOOM!
The 20th Annual Belmont Shore Classic Car Show will rev up Sunday, Sept. 13 at 10am, lasting until 3pm. On view will be more than 600 beautifully maintained and restored classic cars (pre-1975). HULA-BILLY ROCK-OUT
The Gaslamp Restaurant & Bar, 6251 E. PCH, will host a “Step Out & Rock Out” night Wednesday, September 16 to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. Twenty percent of all food and alcohol sales will go to the ADA for the Step Out for Diabetes Walk on October 4 at Shoreline Park. The night will feature the energetic rock of The All Stars and the hula-billy rock of The Hula Girls. There will also be an opportunity drawing with prizes from local merchants. Doors open at 5pm, and admission is free.

HOW “GREEN” IS YOUR GARDEN?
The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) will provide a free Eco-Gardener class each month through December. The next class, “Irrigation Basics for Homeowners,” will be Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9am to noon. GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Los Altos United Methodist Church, 5950 E. Willow Street, will host its third vintage car show on Sunday, October 4. Viewing time for the public will be from 9:30am to 2pm. The public can view a range of cars in the large church parking lot at the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Willow Street. Admission is free.
