The Long Beach Police Department is seeking the public’s help in identifying a suspect that is wanted in connection with a sexual assault that occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 30, at approximately 8pm in the area of Cherry Avenue and Ocean Boulevard.
The victim, who is in her mid-twenties, was stepping out of the shower when an armed suspect confronted her. The victim was forced into her living room, where she was sexually assaulted.
The suspect was described as a male Hispanic, between 5’6” and 5’11”, average build, wearing a black ski mask that had red trim around the eyes.
Detectives from the Sex Crimes Detail believe this incident may be related to another sexual assault that occurred on August 8, 2008, because the physical description and method of operation of the suspect from the December 30, 2009 attack matches this earlier crime. During the 2008 case the suspect concealed his identity, although the victim was able to get a brief look at him. She described the suspect as a male Hispanic, between 5’6” and 5’11”, average build, short black hair with green/hazel eyes, long eyelashes, and a small pockmark-type scar above his right eyebrow. At the time of the sketch, the suspect had a full beard and mustache, however that characteristic may have changed.
In both cases, the suspect appears to have been familiar with the area and may have been able to blend into the neighborhood. He possibly worked in the area, which would have provided him the opportunity to observe his victims’ personal routines. In both attacks, the suspect made entry through unlocked windows.
Residents are reminded to check their homes for unlocked doors and windows. If you encounter the suspect call 9-1-1, or if you see anyone suspicious in your neighborhood call the Long Beach Police Dispatch Center at (562) 435-6711. Anyone who would like to remain anonymous or talk to a detective may call the Long Beach Police Department Sex Crimes tip line at (562) 570-7878.
