CSULB offering free tax-filing assistance

Accounting majors at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) are assisting students and members of the community with their 2009 tax returns free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The program will run through April 9 at the university, but volunteers will not see clients when the campus closes for Spring Break, March 29–April 4. [Read more →]

In heated debate, two candidates for city prosecutor square off on criminal defense

In one of the livelier debates of the Long Beach election season, the two candidates for Long Beach city prosecutor volleyed verbally March 3 at a forum hosted by Long Beach Council PTA at Hughes Middle School. Construction work on LB Airport continues

Since the December 10, 2009 groundbreaking, work on the Long Beach Airport’s (LGB) new parking garage has been in full swing. The newest development includes the closure of parking Lot C, effective March 1, 2010. Included in the plans are modifications to the roadways serving LGB. The roadway improvements will allow drivers exiting LGB direct access to southbound Lakewood Boulevard and will mitigate traffic congestion along Donald Douglas Drive. [Read more →]

There is some very important mail coming your way– and I don’t mean email. Everyone in the nation will be receiving a census form in his or her mailbox within the next day or so– if you haven’t already– and it is ultra important that we all properly fill out the paperwork and mail it back as soon as possible. Our cities rely on the accuracy of the census to help them qualify for federal funds. Please remind your family, friends and neighbors to complete and mail the forms as well. Registered animal offenders?

The concept of an animal abuse registry is to list those convicted of certain animal-related felonies on a public website as is done with sex offenders. As animal abuse is a violent act, often a precursor to violence against people, frequently a symptom of problems in children, and always present in the criminal histories of violent felony offenders, it must be taken seriously. It is also critical that in practice, such a registry would protect animals from future abuse, further public safety, and could withstand the necessary Constitutional scrutiny to justify the public branding of offenders.
